About
Bio: Leonique van Houwelingen is Chief Executive Officer of BNY Mellon's European bank, The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium.
Prior to this, Leonique served as an Executive Board member of BNY Mellon's European bank, in conjunction with her role as Asset Servicing Business Head for Continental Europe and Country Executive for The Netherlands.
After graduating from her civil law studies at the University in Leiden, The Netherlands, Leonique started her career at ABN AMRO Bank in 1995 where she held various managerial roles in areas including Export Finance, Fixed Income Transaction Management, Legal and Working Capital.
Leonique moved to BNY Mellon in 2003 when the bank created a joint venture company, ABN AMRO Mellon Global Securities B.V., to provide custody and related services to financial institutions outside North America. She initially oversaw the creation and management of the new joint venture's Legal, Risk and Compliance department.
Following BNY Mellon's purchase of ABN AMRO Bank's 50% share in the custody joint venture three years later, she took on a new role as Head of Relationship Management - Asset Servicing for BNY Mellon's Continental European clients.
In 2009 Leonique assumed an additional role as Country Executive for The Netherlands and accepted additional responsibilities as manager of The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV's Amsterdam branch.
From 2012 to end of 2018, Leonique has been the Chair of the Foreign Bankers Association in The Netherlands and a board member of the Dutch Association for banks. She is a board member of AmCham Belgium and AmCham The Netherlands.
Since 2019 Leonique has been a board member of JA Europe, the largest non-profit organisation in Europe dedicated to preparing young people for employment and entrepreneurship.
In 2020, Leonique participated as member of the European Commissions' High Level Forum on Capital Markets Union as one of the representatives of the private sector. The HLF published its report in May 2020 and the European Commission adopted the report translating this into an Action Plan.
Leonique is a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in financial services and is a sponsor of Women In Finance (WIF) in Belgium. Leonique also supports a number of BNY Mellon's own diversity and inclusion initiatives and is the EMEA Executive Sponsor for PRISM, BNY Mellon's LGBTQ+ employee group.
