The 2023 NYC Marathon + supporting Darkness to Light

LGBT Great Emma Palmer Marathon

Trigger and Content warnings: This page contains reference to the mission of a charities work which is focused on ending child sexual abuse.

On Sunday November 5th, our very own Head of Talent and Empowerment, Emma, will be taking on the New York City Marathon! By way of support, we wanted to kick-start a campaign to help Emma get to her fundraising goal and reach out to those of you in our wonderful network, because we think what Emma is doing is amazing.

Emma is running on behalf of Darkness to Light, a non-profit committed to empowering adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse through awareness, education, and stigma reduction.

Over 25 years ago, a child sexual abuse crisis came to light. A small but passionate group of citizens came together and wondered why services were only available after a child was abused.

They asked themselves a courageous question: “What can we do to prevent abuse and keep children safe?” Soon, they mobilized other community members to create an initiative around educating adults to protect children. Holding yearly conferences called, “From Darkness to Light,” they began to elevate the voices and stories of adult survivors of child sexual abuse. This initial community advocacy laid the foundation for a new organization. In 2000, Darkness to Light was officially born in Charleston, South Carolina. Today, Darkness to Light has a presence in all 50 States and 115 countries.

Emma’s reason for running:

“As an equity, diversity, and inclusion practitioner, I am constantly reminded of what injustice and inequity looks like. I am also reminded of what aspiring for a better world would look like, too. My work is centred around the human experience and the rights of people. The safety and welfare of children and young people everywhere is something we should all be concerned about. I want to live in a world where every child feels safe. I am running on behalf of Darkness to Light because I believe in their mission and I want to live in a world where, as a society, we consciously choose to keep kids safe.”

This will be Emma's first ever marathon and she has done a fantastic job so far of raising an impressive amount of money towards her fundraising goal. Through the kindness and generosity of others, she is 64% of the way there to reaching her target of $2,500 USD.

If you would like to contribute to this brilliant cause and help get Emma to her target amount, then please follow the link below to make your donation. With only 36% left to go, your support would mean the world.

A big thank you from Emma and all of us here at LGBT Great!

Good luck, Emma!
