Rob Shipman

Director at The Pensioneer Trustee Company

About

Bio: Rob started his early career in education in Kent and South London as a secondary school teacher. As Head of Geography and as a newly qualified teacher at the time, he was the youngest head of department in the Kent secondary school system.

After a number of years Rob's career took a complete U-turn and he ended up working in offshore financial services based out in Gibraltar. From this base Rob developed a number of different pension products and took them to market successfully which lead him to becoming Managing Director of a large trust company within The Sovereign Group. This gave Rob the opportunity to open and shape the newly formed Guernsey operation with his then husband who also happened to be on the board with him. While this had its challenges, Rob's sexuality fortunately was never a hindrance, or even an issue for the company.

Today Rob is on the board of The Pensioneer Trustee Company (Guernsey) Ltd, a pension trust company which is an owner managed business after breaking away via an MBO from its parent company. One could say that it's almost in a new start-up phase as the company has 11 members of staff.

Rob says: "My sexuality has never affected my appointment or my career development, and I have built up a local and international reputation in the international cross boarder pension and retirement benefit space for private clients. After serving on the boards of four different financial organisations as an executive and non-executive director in a small island community, I feel that I am a strong positive role model to people not just in the finance sector, but the wider community. I am proof that no matter what your sexuality is, you can achieve whatever you want as long as you are determined to do so. I have never hidden my sexuality, and indeed for a large part of my career I worked with my then husband until we separated a few years back."

Rob is a full member of The Institute of Directors, Chartered Management Institute, Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and The Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners. Locally, he is involved in supporting the local equality agenda, and both Rob and his company are supportive of Guernsey's new equality act proposal.
