Nuno Duarte

Business Intelligence Analyst at Legal & General

About

Bio: I am Nuno Duarte, born in Portugal and moved to the UK at the age of 14. I am an active ally for the LGBTQ+ community!

After graduating, I got a job as a Data Analyst in the city. After spending almost 2 years in that role, I decided to move from London to Cardiff to work as a Business Intelligence Analyst for Legal & General.

I have joined an LGBTI football club called Cardiff Dragons FC, the only LGBTI Welsh team which is part of the GFSN (Gay Football Supporters Network), national league. We are also part of a campaign called Football V Homophobia.

I am a competitive person and always want to win in everything I do. However, playing for the Cardiff Dragons FC in the GFSN league has helped me realise that there are many other things that are more important than winning. I have learned it's all about teamwork and inclusion. It doesn't matter if you're good or bad at football; whether you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or straight; or if you are fit or unfit. We welcome everyone. Friendship doesn't choose gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation, and this is what the Cardiff Dragons FC is all about.

I have always been a supporter of the LGBTI Community. However, I have never been exposed to an LGBTI environment like this before. I have met so many open-minded people who have also allowed me to open up and grow as a person. I always thought that my life as a child/teenager was really difficult, but as a straight man, I now feel that it was nothing compared to the lived experience of some of my teammates.

Many people still see the LGBTQ community as "not normal" or a taboo because of their own religious values, culture, beliefs and tradition. I believe that we need to start setting that aside and work together to start seeing people as people.
