Risk & Control Manager at Monzo


Matt is an influential figurehead sought out by senior leaders across Monzo to use his powerful stakeholder management skills and industry knowledge to solve technical, human, organisational and strategic problems. He is outstanding risk manager with first and second line risk management experience across operational, financial crime, conduct and credit risks using a solid data-driven and detail-orientated approach. During his career he has led LGBTQ+ employee groups; including the whole Southern Region for Barclays' LGBTQ+ network, Spectrum and shouting about the importance of gender and sexuality equity for future leaders and graduates.
Throughout my time at Monzo, I've led the development of our LGBTQ+ employee group whilst facing headwinds including the pandemic and a challenging environment of societal oppression. Most notably, I solidified our partnership with Stonewall Housing, which spring-boarded into an in-app donation feature, and an external panel discussion to highlight the challenges of economic abuse in the LGBTQ+ community. I've also led Monzo's involvement with other cross-industry networks, such as Wave (a junior grade cross-industry network for LGBTQ+ professionals), of which I was a founding member. This is one block of our community engagement strategy, which I've structured and presented to our executive members - giving more clarity on the mission and purpose of our LGBTQ+ ERG. In addition, I'm a passionate educator, often speaking to the whole organisation about the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion, language and the history which has shaped our community to date. Outside of the LGBTQ+ community, I've also acted as a trusted advisor on consultations to our caregiver leave policy enhancements to ensure this remained equitable for all employees. The new policy has been praised as "gold standard" when benchmarked against our competitors.
I am proud to be a Project 1000 role model because I'm a disruptor and here to demolish homo-, bi- and transphobia at all levels of society. The LGBTQ+ community is full of joy, passion and integrity - it is my responsibility to showcase these traits across the whole community, not just those who've benefitted from the current norms.
