Toby Elkin

Business Compliance Officer at BNY Mellon

About

Bio: Toby works as a Business Compliance Officer for Operations and Technology in EMEA at BNY Mellon based in the UK. This role entails giving advice, guidance, and solving challenges of the business to help protect clients and the firm’s brand, assets, and reputation. He has been with BNY Mellon since 2007. He began in a junior role within Institutional Accounting, then progressed to Financial Reporting followed by another role within the Finance department before joining Compliance. This movement has given him a solid understanding of the business and its various functions.

Born in Hampshire, England, Toby’s educational background spans accounting, business studies and economics. He is a qualified accountant and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). He has always been curious to push himself which has led him to progress through multiple departments and roles. His CIMA qualification has also provided him with opportunities to take on more senior level roles and responsibilities.

Outside work, Toby enjoys activities such as swimming, tennis, jogging, yoga and meditation. He also loves to cook and have people over for dinner, and to switch off from his busy life, he enjoys watching a good TV show or film. Toby’s support for LGBT+ inclusion and equality come from his own early career experience at a different company, when he could not bring his real self to the workplace which slowed down his progress and hindered him from building authentic connections and reaching his full potential. Having gone through such a tough time, he wants to help others in bringing their full and confident selves to the workplace.

Toby comments:
“BNY Mellon is a great place to work and do business. The values of our company align with my own personal values, especially investing in each other’s success and seeking out who is missing and helping everyone feel included. There are a lot of resources to help people grow and develop, including a large variety of training courses – both technical and soft skill focused, and formal mentoring programmes in which I have participated and benefited hugely from.”

“I am proud to be a Project 1000 Role Model because LGBT+ issues matter a lot to me. I want to help show others that they can achieve their full potential through working hard, being genuine and honest in their dealings with others, and at the same time being their true authentic self.”
