Rafael is a Diversity and Inclusion professional with experience in both the charity and financial services sector. He was listed in the Economists’ Top 50 Diversity Professionals, has been shortlisted in the British LGBT Awards for the Corporate Rising Star category and was shortlisted for the Advocate of the Year Award at the 2017 Women in Finance Awards.
Currently, Rafael is the Diversity & Inclusion Business Partner at Schroders where he looks after the firm’s global Diversity & Inclusion strategy and ensures the firm meets all of the targets set as part of the strategy. Previously, Rafael worked as TSB Bank’s Diversity & Inclusion Manager and as Aberdeen Asset Management’s Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator.
Since coming out as gay on his 15th birthday, Rafael has worked towards improving LGBT+ inclusion. At University, Rafael helped run the local LGBT+ network. At work, Rafael has created LGBT+ networks wherever he couldn’t find one.
Born in Mexico, raised in Texas and currently lives in London, Rafael’s multicultural identity has given him a unique experience of being both a person of colour and LGBT+. Outside of work, Rafael is a big video game fanatic and helps run London Gaymers – a group that provides a safe space for LGBT+ people who love video games to connect and a group that advocates for more LGBT+ representation in the video game industry.
